Iceland’s glaciers // Iceland

Studies of the dynamics, hydrology of Icelandic ice caps and their response to climate change are of international scientific interests and of outmost practical importance for the Icelandic society. Some outlet glaciers of these ice caps are monitored in the field but given the total ice-covered area, satellite remote sensing is the only mean to obtain a comprehensive understanding of their evolution.

Based on SPOT5-HRS and Fomorsat-2 images, our precise goals in this Planet Action project are (1) to estimate the ice loss (or gain) of these ice caps by comparing multi-temporal digital elevation models (DEM) and, (2) to understand the spatial and temporal variability of the ice flow.
